Shelter For Animals

© jon_a_rossAnimals are a gift to the society and it is our duty to protect them and provide them with all the help they need. Animal shelter is such a facility where homeless, lost or abandoned animals are kept. These shelters give the much needed care till they are adopted, taken back by their owners or put up in a new home. There are many types of shelters, like open door shelters, sanctuaries, no kill shelters etc. Sanctuaries are used mainly for wild animals which cannot be adopted. Animal shelters for dogs are known as dog pounds and dogs which are adopted from these shelters are known as shelter dogs or pound puppies.
There are various shelters like the ASPCA shelters, the Humane Society shelters which help in giving the animals a proper home. People, who like to take these animals home, get in touch with these shelters thus showing their love and kindness and gifting themselves a nice pet.

Dozens of Volunteers Help With Abandoned Dogs at Florida Animal Shelter

© AmazonCARES
A recent raid on a home that was reported for animal abuse led a Florida shelter to obtain 261 neglected dogs. In order to help shelter workers with the massive incoming of pets many volunteered. Since the seize took place over 70 volunteers have shown their support and providing financing. They have come out to clean and groom the dogs, help feed and treat them, among other things.
The pets were taken from a local home in Polk County Florida. The home had doubled as both an animal shelter and a residential abode. When authorities arrived dogs were living outside as well as inside every room of the house. I'd like to believe the owners had good intentions that went awry.
Officials in Polk County are amazed at the turn out of volunteers they have gotten to help care for the dogs. It just goes to show that there are still plenty of good people in the world. For more about this story read Polk Dog Abuse: Volunteer Today in Polk to Care for 261 Abused Dogs By Keith W. Kohn, Orlando Sentinel.

Are People Responsible for Animal Shelter Overcrowding?

© daveparker
There are several kill free animal shelters in my area of the world, yet most of them are continuously booked up. The city pound is always full, even overcrowded. When it comes down to it who is really responsible for this?
Animals are often abandoned, without being spayed or neutered. These abandoned animals meet up with other abandoned animals and create thousands upon thousands of unwanted offspring each year. The animals starve, get hit by cars, and are abused by unsavory children and even adults. The ones that do survive often end up at the overcrowded city animal shelter where they will eventually be destroyed. It's all very sad and mostly preventable.
As Rachel Sa of the Toronto Sun points out in her article People are The Reason There are So Many Animals in Need, animals get in these positions thanks to the humans who aren't caring for them.
It is the responsible thing to only take on as many animals as you can adequately care for, it is also the responsible thing to spay and neuter your pets to prevent mass overpopulation. Unfortunately many people only think about these things after they hear sad stories like this one, and then let the thought go as quickly as it came about.

Farm Animals in Need of Rescue

© threephin
Thanks to recently released undercover videos from Conklin Dairy in Ohio the need for farm animal protection is making the news again. Though we often think about dogs and cats that need our help, the farm animals in need of rescue are often disregarded. Farm animals are often abused and tortured in spite of the fact that their are humane systems of dealing with all aspects of animal farming, even on farms where the animals are slaughtered. Unfortunately these animals have been ignored for far too long.
In the case of Conklin Dairy, videos show cows being beaten, having their tails broken, even being stabbed with pitchforks. All this is going on while the human participants make a game out of the tragedy, illustrating their disregard for life. What's even more heart wrenching about this event is that Ohio has the weakest animal cruelty laws in the nation. Though an arrest was made in the event, with twelve counts of animal cruelty filed against the perpetrator, none will be considered felonies.

Oscar The Dog's World Woof Tour
Oscar The Dog, traveled the world last year in 80 days. His owner, Joanne Lefson was able to finance the £250,000 six-month trip by selling her home. Their round the world trip was Lefson's project that used Oscar's perfect package to show the entire world that great dogs are available at shelters all over the world.
Oscar was found by her owner a day before he was to be 'put down' in a South African kennel. Pet and owner made the journey around the world to inspire millions to help save Oscar's fellow canines living as strays.
Joanne Lefson said about Oscar and their trip:
"If I hadn't gone to the kennel that fateful day Oscar had one more day left and would have been put down. When I discovered what a wonderful dog Oscar was it broke my heart to think how many 'Oscar's' are still out there and simply just don't get that second chance.
I sold my house to fund the trip, but this project has never been about the money, it's about the message and Oscar and I would do it again in a heartbeat. My friends and family have always thought that I'm a bit weird 'crazy'."
Maybe crazy but their World Woof Tour has surely inspired a lot of people to adopt dogs from shelters.
