Before Christmas is the time to have homeless pet available to the puppy millers and backyard breeders. In this season homeless pet like puppies and kittens are sold. Sometimes the holidays aren't the best time to bring in a new homeless pet. It can be hectic. There may be guests coming in and out of the house or we may travel. For some families, though, it's a great time to add a homeless pet. Kids are out of school and parents may be off work for extended days. If new owners plan ahead, this season can work wonderfully as a time to bring in a new homeless pet. It probably might be the best gift for the children from their parents before the arrival of Christmas.

When a friend of mine was getting ready to take a transatlantic flight, taking her dog with her, she, of course, researched dog crates and chose the one most suitable for her dog and the type of travel involved. In order to get the dog used to that crate, she put it out for him a couple of weeks ahead of the trip. He took to it wonderfully! He went in so happily and sprawled out…my firend left the door open, except during the night…and he took his toys into it, and seemed to really take possession! So much did he give off this air of satisfaction that we started calling it his "studio"! It was really adorable, and thank goodness for him. I'm sure it provided some comfort amidst the strangeness of the transatlantic travel, to be in his "pad"! In fact my friend said that he didn't appear anxious. That was really good planning.

Did you know that about 5 to 7 million pets are sent to animal shelters across America each year?
Can you imagine that between 3 and 4 million of these animals are euthanized?
Would you believe that only 2 percent of cats and less than 20 percent of dogs are sent back to their owners–despite the fact that they had tags or microchips to identify them?
Something is very wrong here. Animal shelters are supposed to protect animals. Why is this happening? Get the facts directly from the ASPCA, the top organization for humane protection for animals.
Skip the other agencies — find a direct ASPCA shelter near you. Whether you are helping to place a pet in a new home, adopt a cat or dog, puppy or kitten, volunteer your time or donate to charity, the ASPCA is the best place to start.
